WASTE MANAGEMENT @ HOME - PART -2 -WASTE TO COMPOST KIT DETAILS
For recycling wet kitchen waste into organic compost at home easily. "waste to compost " home composting kits are available These kits are for Aerobic Composting. These kits are very simple to use, easy to store, no-mess kits.
The composting kit consists of :
Composting bins- These are nothing but thick plastic buckets /empty paint buckets with tight lid and holes.(These holes are drilled all around the bucket at an equal distance for airflow). You can find these here.
Compost maker brick - This is a cocopeat treated with microbes compressed into a brick for easy storage. Compost maker powder has to be made from this brick .(process explained click here). This powder makes the process of composting easier and mess-free. By using this powder, there will be no odor, no flies, no ants, no mixing work . This takes care of everything and makes the process very very easy and finally converts the waste into useful organic compost. 1 brick of 900 grms gives up to 4 kgs of compost maker powder. click here to check them
Either we can buy the complete kit (compost bin + compost maker brick) or else we can prepare the compost bin at home (by drilling holes to a thick paint/plastic bucket with tight lid) and buy only compost maker brick .
Composting process with kit in brief ; (detailed step-by-step process )
1. Powdering the compost maker brick
2. Initial setting up of bin
3. Adding the kitchen waste, covering it with compost maker and closing lid tightly.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
1. Waste collection- Daily collect the kitchen waste in a separate container. keep the container always closed with a lid to avoid any flies laying eggs in it. As the eggs may turn into flies after we transfer the waste into the bin.
2. No Liquids: Drain all the liquids and put only the wet pulp in the bin. Do not put liquids, rasam, sambar etc in the bin.
3. As far as possible, transfer the kitchen waste into the compost bin daily. If at all , its not possible, it can be done once in 2 days. But till then take care that the waste bowl is closed with a lid.

F.A.Q's OF HOME COMPOSTING
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
1. Where can we get these home composting bins and compost maker bricks /powder?
2. Where to keep the bin??
A. Keep your compost bin in a place -
- that is easily accessible
- that has good air circulation
- that is protected from rain ( sunlight is good )
- that is not too damp & dark - do not put in places like bathrooms, under the sink
Some ideal places to keep may be : Balcony, terrace (but protected from rain), back yard, unused rooms, under the staircase, etc.
3. It's smelling, flies are coming, the white fungus is formed - what to do??
A. All the above things maybe because the waste is open and not covered properly with the compost maker powder, or due to excess wetness in the bin.
Just cover the waste with one more layer of the compost maker powder without leaving any gaps, covering all the waste thoroughly . Close the lid tightly. - All the above issues get solved.
4. Water vapor inside the bin ...oh ,,what to do??
A. Nothing to worry. Its absolutely fine. Water vapor .i.e condensation is absolutely a good sign of composting. Just take a cloth and wipe the water vapor ..thats it.
5. How to know whether the compost is ready or not??
The compost is ready when - whatever we added to the bin is black in color and turns into powder and crumbles in hand.
6. Do we have to buy the Compost maker brick again and again?
A. When we start composting, initially the usage of compost maker powder will be more, as we have so many doubts and don't know the exact quantity to use for covering the waste.
so, we may have to buy a few compost maker bricks.
But once we get used to the process, the quantity of powder used for each bucket will reduce and so the frequency of buying the bricks also reduces.
Not only that, once our compost is ready, we can mix half of the home prepared compost with half of the compost maker powder and use it for our next composting bin.
So, the frequency and usage of the number of bricks reduce.
7. Some chunks of undecomposed waste is still there after 30 days.. what to do??
A. Some organic items like corn cobs, groundnut shells, small fruit seeds etc take more time to decompose than the other normal organic items we added. Don't worry .. ..just separate them from the prepared compost and add them back to the next composting process bin.

SAY NO TO PLASTIC
As we all know, Plastic is the greatest environmental hazardπΉπΉand a threat to human life. It’s like a slow poison, contaminating every inch
of our surroundings. It's not degradable and so whatever we dump goes and ends
as landfill. Slowly it kills the natural
vegetation, animals, pollutes the air, etc .
And if all these are polluted and destroyed.. can we, human beings
escape??? Obviously No…
Currently, managing used plastic is one of the burning
problems for all. Although the government authorities are trying the best
possible methods, it's still found in a “threatening stage”.
So, let's all think about what’s the solution for this?
3R’s – Yes, it is the only solution for this hazardous
issue.
Reduce↓- Reuse↺ – Recycle ♼
If each of us starts implementing this formula – we can surely solve the problem.
Now, the question is HOW??
…ok..
Let's start with the listing, where & how we use more plastic in our day-to-day life:
- Plastic covers/carry bags etc
- Plastic water bottles
- Use & throw plastic disposable items
So, let's start thinking about how to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle them.
Change starts from each & every house.
Let's say NO TO PLASTIC ..

REDUCE THE USE OF PLASTIC BAGS
As we all know there will be lots of carry- bags/plastic bags coming into our house in some or other way. So, just try to think about an alternative for those bags.
Shopping bags- We can use Cloth /Jute bags – we can get many designer bags also. These are washable, reusable bags. So, a one-time buy is enough. They last for years.
Vegetable /fruits/flowers- For this also, we
can use cloth vegetable bags. These days, we can get cloth bags with several pockets inside, especially for vegetables. This bag facilitates easy segregation
of veggies and also avoids bringing home
small plastic carry bags.
Storage bags- Instead of using plastic bags for storing veggies,
fruits & flowers, which is neither healthy for us nor
eco-friendly, we can use small cloth storage bags /cloth potli bags. These
bags are eco-friendly as they are made of mostly cotton/muslin cloth. They
retain the freshness of veggies and fruits for a longer period when compared to
plastic covers.
What more- we can even prepare/sew/stitch these bags at home if we have time and interest. We can use any clean cotton fabric for this.

Lets Not Forget :
To always keep 1or 2 cloth bags in our purse/office bag/ car/byke / office desk and wherever we go. This way we can avoid a lot of plastic bags coming home.
It's not just serving or caring for the environment- its caring for our family’s health & happiness.
Because we are fully dependent on the environment. What we breathe, what we eat, what we wear and what we see – all these are nothing but the environment. So, if it's safe- we are safe.
REMEMBER
PLASTIC -KEEP AWAY
HAPPY-ALL THE WAY
